Chapter 14

The sensational discovery that the Reverend Doctor Donnie Morrison, sanctimonious politician and part-time minister of the Free Church of Scotland, had indeed been the victim of an outrageous frame-up, had sent Frank's investigation into a bit of a tail-spin. Prior to the discovery, he had been pretty much just going through the motions, making sure he did a competent and thorough-enough job without really expecting anything much to come of either strand of the case. But now of course it was a whole different story, and doubly complicated by the fact that his annoying hotshot reporter mate Yash Patel knew all about it too, having put Frank and his colleagues onto the trail in the first place, and in a day or two the story was going to be splashed all over his paper's Sunday edition. Chronicle Proves Morrison Victim of Deep Fake Attack. That would be the gist of Patel's story, and once it was out there it couldn't be ignored. Not only that, but in an hour's time he had a phone-call scheduled with his gaffer, a call in which ACC Natalie Young would doubtless ask awkward questions and might even become slightly tetchy when it emerged that the breakthrough, if you could call it that, was down to a two-bit newspaper scribbler.

So now it was a time for the gathering of thoughts, to make an attempt to work out where the hell they were with the case and, more critically, where the hell they should go next. And that was why he'd set up his own mid-morning gathering of his crack team, at this precise moment assembled in the canteen of New Gorbals nick. In deference to the expected importance of the session, he'd pinched an easel-mounted whiteboard from one of the upstairs incident rooms and was presently standing in front of it, a marker pen in one hand and a half-eaten bacon roll in the other. Present, and also equipped with breakfast essentials, were his DCs Lexy McDonald and Ronnie French, together with Principal Forensic Officer Eleanor Campbell of Maida Vale Labs, London, W9.

'Right then boys and girls,' he said through a mouthful of roll, 'I'd be most grateful if we could all engage our massive brains and see if we can figure out a plan of action for this goddamned holy mess of an investigation. But before that, I need to refresh myself on what I was asked to look at in the first place. Everybody okay with that?'

'Sure guv,' French said. Frank quite reasonably assumed he was speaking for everyone, so gave a thumbs-up and continued.

'Right then. So you will recall that my first mission was to look into Donnie Morrison's ludicrous assertion that he was set up by the Karolin Dabrowski woman in order to force a by-election and thus open the door for the nut-job Tommy Taggart to win his seat. The second mission was to look into allegations of funny business surrounding the aforementioned by-election, said funny business designed to smooth Taggart's passage to our Mickey-Mouse Holyrood parliament.
